Smart & Connected Social Places

Smart Things innovations in the public sector

A number of Smart Things companies are taking advantage of the regional push to foster greater collaboration between the private and public sector.

Smart and Connected Social Places (SCSP) is a programme in the Glasgow City Region focused on using 5G and advanced wireless technologies to improve social housing, connected care, and data aggregation.

In August 2024, the City Region also launched the SCSP Innovation Fund. This challenge-based Fund provided short term project funding to small and medium enterprises and third sector organisations that will deliver benefits locally within Glasgow City Region and engage local people in the design and development of services to meet their needs.

The programme saw a number of companies share a portion of £600,000 in funding, two of which were Glasgow-based Nooku and Smplicare. Having both taken part in previous STAC Scale cohorts, the companies undertook two pilot projects in the community using their products.

Nooku are advancing respiratory care in Glasgow by integrating 5G-enabled air quality monitoring into the daily lives of individuals with conditions such as asthma and COPD. Their project deploys smart sensors to track environmental pollutants in real time, delivering personalised alerts and recommendations to help vulnerable residents manage their exposure and reduce health risks.

Smplicare are addressing the significant challenge of falls among older adults by leveraging wearable technology. Through their AgeWell Coaching Platform, participants aged 55 and over who have experienced a fall receive Fitbit Inspire 3 fitness trackers. These devices collect data that feeds into a tailored exercise and wellbeing programme delivered via the Smplicare app.
