DIGITAL ECONOMY
The strength of the city economy is crucial to tackling inequality and providing opportunity for our citizens, and to best utilise the incredible range of talent that Glasgow has to offer.
The growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the fourth industrial revolution and the city’s increasing strengths in the likes of quantum, space, fintech and life sciences, offer growing diversity and opportunity for a technologically skilled workforce.
To support Glasgow's burgeoning digital economy, a holistic approach is needed to overcome the issues facing the city's tech ecosystem. The Scottish Technology Ecosystem Review identifies interventions that are necessary to support the development of Scotland's tech ecosystem on a local and national level.
Digital skills are the foundation of our future workforce. By working with partners in primary, higher and further education, we will ensure that citizens are digitally confident and equipped with the necessary skills needed to enter an increasingly digital job market.
Through public and private sector collaboration, alongside a refreshed approach to work experience, we will build links between those emerging from digital skills training and employers to maximise employment opportunities.
Diversity is key to a vibrant digital economy and with a strong record of promoting entrepreneurship Glasgow will continue its work to address the challenges that face women and black, Asian and minority ethnic entrepreneurs - fostering entrepreneurship by drawing on the full spectrum of talent and ideas that exist across Glasgow's tech ecosystem.
The growth of a robust technology SME base through Council supported programmes like Techscaler by CodeBase and the Smart Things Accelerator Centre, will help tech entrepreneurs achieve critical mass and maximise self-sustainability, leading to increased productivity and employment.
Glasgow’s digital infrastructure is a key component to an inclusive digital economy. Through working with industry, we will continue to support the adoption and implementation of a robust network that provides citizens and business with affordable and fit-for-purpose connectivity options.
Glasgow’s digital economy, digital skills, and digital infrastructure are all recognised as key enablers for addressing the grand challenges outlined in Glasgow's Strategic Plan: -
- Enhancing Productivity
- The Climate Emergency
- Inclusive Growth
