THE GRAND CHALLENGES
At the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Glasgow City Region’s Intelligence Hub undertook an in-depth analysis of the city region economy and its eight local authority areas. In addition to a range of economic strengths in the city and across the region, it also found a host of longstanding problems, which have been grouped under three Grand Challenges. Given the magnitude of these obstacles and the potential benefits of solving them, like our colleagues across the city region, we see these as being the three Grand Challenges facing our economy.

Alongside these long-standing challenges, there are also a host of emerging issues which demand immediate attention, including the consequences of Brexit and a national labour shortage. Addressing these challenges will not be easy, and the powers to do so sit across different tiers of government. Success is also dependent on collaboration with our key sector partners and with support from our business base. Some of the most pressing challenges facing our communities are listed in the following three sections.
