ADVANCED MANUFACTURING INNOVATION DISTRICT SCOTLAND

Enabling infrastructure nearing completion.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is Scotland’s home of manufacturing innovation. This emerging centre of excellence is crucial to national and international efforts and is part of Scotland’s answer to balancing manufacturing requirements while meeting net zero commitments. AMIDS is part of Scotland and the UK’s answer.
AMIDS is home to the headquarters facility of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland – a unique collaboration between public, private and academic institutions across the country. The UK’s first Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, CPI, will sit next-door bringing the pharmaceutical industry together in another unique collaboration to find innovative new production processes.
Net Zero solutions are at the heart of Renfrewshire Council’s aspirations for AMIDS: to create a world-class campus environment that will serve as an example across Scotland and the UK.
AMIDS is building on the success of existing academic centres of excellence in metal forming and lightweight manufacturing, with a cluster of world-renowned names already on site, new partners and occupiers are coming onboard including Boeing and Thermo Fisher.

INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The investment opportunity at AMIDS is primarily focussed on delivering the commercial aspect of the site. It is estimated that around £150 million is required to deliver the full masterplan. Renfrewshire Council is currently (Spring 2022) undertaking a procurement exercise to identify a development partner to collaboratively deliver AMIDS in line with the masterplan.
AMIDS will be a world-class environment that fosters collaboration between industry and academia to transform manufacturing processes. Good interest has already been expressed in the site from several occupiers.
To realise the ambition to a net zero future, every level of the development from the ground up is being considered:
- Providing appropriate infrastructure, design guides for buildings and transport routes to the site. Forthcoming opportunities for on-site generation of renewables using low and zero carbon technology.
- Delivery of a 5th generation heat network to supply low carbon heat to occupiers would make this the first development of its kind in Scotland.
- New high-quality public realm and green space will provide opportunities for healthy, sustainable, active lifestyles.
In comparison to the use of traditional gas boilers over the next 40 years, it is forecast the AMIDS district heat network will generate a carbon reduction of:
- 9720 tonnes (90% reduction) for initial phases (NMIS and MMIC)
- 56,679 tonnes (92% reduction) up to phase 4 of development
- 90,926 tonnes (93% reduction) assuming full AMIDS masterplan development.
STATUS UPDATE
Construction on enabling infrastructure is nearing completion (Spring 2022). Both the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland and Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, CPI, are expected to be completed by the end of 2022. A procurement exercise to secure a Joint Venture development partner is now live (Spring 2022).
