GLASGOW'S GREEN CREDENTIALS

In 2019, Glasgow City Council declared a climate and ecological emergency and formed a working group that produced 61 recommendations on how the city should respond to the emergency. Glasgow is committed to becoming a Net Zero Carbon city by 2030.

Solar

Glasgow has an active programme of solar installations on its buildings and is working to promote opportunities for further investment in solar, not only on buildings, but on land parcels throughout the city.

Solar presents a steady and assured investment and it’s a key part of the city’s decarbonisation plans.

Wind

Renewable power generated through wind turbines is a significant part of the Scottish generation profile and Glasgow is keen to increase its existing contribution to its energy demands through wind generation.

Though sites in a compact city are limited, the wind resource is abundant, thus there are opportunities for investment into wind energy in the city.

Hydrogen

Glasgow is keen to harness the potential benefits generated through the use of green hydrogen, generated through renewable electricity, both as a potential source of fuel for transportation and a medium for energy storage.

Nature Based Solutions

Climate Ready Clyde, the City Region’s partnership initiative on adaptation, has developed the Glasgow City Region Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan, to build the resilience of the city region to climate change.

EV

EV usage is on the rise in Glasgow and the demands on the existing network are increasing. Glasgow is exploring, alongside other local authorities in the region, ways to work with the private sector to lever in substantial new investment to grow the public EV charging network, in line with Transport Scotland’s vision for public EV charging infrastructure in Scotland and the new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund.

Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy

Glasgow is actively addressing the decarbonisation of its built environment, particularly with regards to the use of heat in homes and businesses.

Our Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy represents a significant step toward the decarbonisation of domestic and non-domestic heating.

The strategy covers the areas of potential heat networks, heat pumps and fabric improvements to upgrade existing housing stock.

Year by which Glasgow is committed to becoming Net Zero Carbon

"These are hugely challenging times economically and socially for cities across the UK. But the building blocks we've put in place in Glasgow in recent years are now bearing fruit.

In just over a year we've secured £300 million in public investment to advance cutting-edge new sectors; work on the transformational Clyde Metro project has taken its most significant step forward to date, and we're announcing a huge advance in delivering the multi-million investment needed for Glasgow's transition to Net Zero.

And in seeking to make Metropolitan Glasgow the most resilient, diverse and innovative regional economy, we're making major strides in improving the life chances and opportunities for all Glaswegians."

- Cllr Susan Aitken, Leader, Glasgow City Council
