GLASGOW RIVERSIDE INNOVATION DISTRICT (GRID)
Summary: Four development opportunities at varying phases requiring investors at all stages. Location: Glasgow's West End Landowner: University of Glasgow, SWG3 and others Status: The delivery of these opportunities will be on a phased approach, with a land supply for the next 30 years. This project is at feasibility stage with a place based, thematic masterplan in progress.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Glasgow Riverside Innovation District (GRID) is an ambitious partnership between the University of Glasgow, Glasgow City Council and Scottish Enterprise to accelerate an inclusive approach to innovation. The district runs from the University Campus to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, including the communities based in Govan, Linthouse and Partick. The University is taking a whole-systems approach to economic development within GRID, driving innovation through their research expertise and convening power to support entrepreneurship and attract high-value industry to co-locate and develop opportunities for local jobs in Govan.
The University along with partners is embracing its role as a key actor in economic development-related projects and opportunities, with the objective of strengthening the University’s links with the communities that live, learn and work in the area, develop new partnerships and collaborations, and deliver a lasting legacy of economic and social prosperity at a local and regional level. This is primarily focused on GRID, an area of c.700 acres encompassing the river Clyde and land on both the northern and southern banks.
At the same time, GRID is committed to delivering opportunities to support access to education within the area, developing opportunities for upskilling and re-skilling, and understanding what more the University can do to address socioeconomic inequalities within Govan and the wider city. Within GRID is world-leading education, medical and cultural assets and there is the potential to build on these assets and create a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
